AUAP SAFETY INFORMATION

To stay safe in your residence hall, you should:

  1. Always lock the door of your residence hall room even if you only go to the restroom, take a shower, or leave for a few minutes. Don't forget to take your key! Talk with your roommate about your door locking policy. You both must agree and try to follow this system.
  2. Always keep valuable (cash, passport, wallet, jewelry, etc.) in a locked drawer in your residence hall. Do not keep a lot of cash with you or in your room. Withdraw cash from ATM machines as needed.
  3. Never leave the front or back door of your residence hall propped open for a friend. If someone wants to enter the residence hall, he/she must be a guest of a resident. Do not hold the door open for another person to enter the residence hall at the same time as you do. Do not open the door if someone knocks and asks to be let in. The doors of the residence hall are supposed to be locked 24 hours a day. This is for your safety and the safety of everyone in your residence hall.
  4. If you ever hear a fire alarm, leave the building immediately.
  5. If you ever receive strange telephone calls, tell your IPA or the Student Services Coordinator as soon as possible.

It is rare for students to see illegal drugs used or sold in the residence halls. However, if someone asks you to try any illegal drugs, say no and leave the room. People who try to sell you drugs may try to be your friends, but they are not. Avoid them.

To stay safe on campus, you should:

  1. For female students, please never walk alone on campus or in Cheney at night. Please ask a male friend to walk with you.
  2. If you ever feel in danger while walking on campus, please go to a well-lighted area. Go inside a building and find other people. Or, go to one of the Code Blue Call Stations. If you press the button on this station, a blue light will flash and 9-1-1 will be automaticall dialed. Pick up the phone and say: "I need help (a man is following me or there is a fire)".

To stay safe while visiting Spokane or Cheney, you should:

  1. Always go with a friend or group of friends and never walk alone at night.
  2. If person tries to talk to you, but you feel uncomfortable, walk away. Do not continue the conversation.
  3. Never accept a ride in a car with a stranger. If a car stops and the person inside asks you if you need a ride, say: "No" and walk away. If you miss the last bus to Cheney, call a taxicab or call an AUAP staff member.
  4. Never hitchhike. This is a very dangerous thing to do in America. The person who stops to pick you up may want to rob or hurt you. If you are lost, find a public telephone and call an AUAP staff member.
  5. At night, stay out of dark parking lots, alleys, or parks.
  6. If you ever feel you are in danger, walk to a public building such as a restaurant or store and call 9-1-1.
  7. While waiting for the bus to Cheney, wait inside the Bus Plaza. Never talk with strangers. If someone is bothering you at the Bus Plaza, go to the Security Desk and ask for help.
  8. When riding on Spokane buses, sit close to the front, near the bus driver.
  9. Be aware of the bus schedule from Spokane to Cheney - especially the time when the last bus leaves.
  10. Do not carry a lot of cash with you. If you need to use an ATM, use a machine in a shopping mall. Never use an ATM that is located on a street at night.
  11. Always carry your AUAP Help Card and your insurance card with you at all times.

If you are a victim of a crime, call 9-1-1, the EWU Campus Police, and an AUAP staff member.
